What's in a label?
- What does free-range mean?
There is no legal definition of free-range and this can mean anything from pigs like ours that are always outdoors to those that are occasionally let out of indoor sheds.
- What does outdoor born or reared mean?
Again there is no legal definition, and so the terms are highly ambiguous. If they are
outdoor born, then they will probably spend all their time after weaning being reared indoors. If they are
outdoor reared, they were probably born indoors (and hence the sows live indoors) then they will probably spend the second half of their lives reared indoors.
- What do the different labelling schemes mean?
There are now many different labelling & welfare schemes in the UK and they can provide even more confusion, as well as cost, in to the purchasing of pork. Each scheme requires different levels of welfare, and these are difficult to summarise.
That is why, instead of signing up to unclear labelling schemes we are committed to customers visiting us so that you can see that all of our pigs spend their entire lives outdoors and you can assess for yourself the quality of their lives. We are always happy for people to visit, so please contact us to arrange a convenient time if you would like to visit.
